Tobi Vail wrote a great piece last week for Mother’s Day about moms who rock, and I thought it would be great to share with you. Rocker moms get overlooked sometimes, but this article talks a lot about the experience of being a mom and being in a band.

Let’s hear it for all our rockin moms and our moms who rock!

Thirty years ago, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts reached #1 on the charts with their definitive take of “I Love Rock n Roll”. Thanks for all the inspiration over the years, Joan Jett!

Here’s some interesting trivia for the day. Haley Johnsen, an American Idol semi-finalist this season, got her start 10 years ago at Rock’n’Roll Camp for Girls (Portland). Read about her experience at camp here.

What’s up, little rockers?! It’s been a while, but we have so many amazing things in the works that we want to share with you. Listen to The Go! Team’s “Huddle Formation” (above) to get you into the spirit!

First things first. Principal Mona went to Antarctica to tell the penguins about Rock Camp. After teaching them “We Rock LA”, she’s back in the states and performing on Letterman tonight with Jason Mraz. Set your DVRS/VCRS.

Also Friday Feb 17 (tomorrow), Beth will be droppin knowledge about RCGLA at the North Hollywood Food Truck Fest, 11458 Burbank Blvd, 5-8pm. Free AND delicious!

Next up, our amazing instructors Meghan Toohey (The So and Sos, The Weepies), Patty Schemel (Hole, Imperial Teen), and Nicole Fiorentino (Smashing Pumkins) have an incredible new project out, The Cold and Lovely. Check out an interview about the band and visit their Pledge Music page here, they’ve got some really cool rewards for pledges, and 10% of the money they raise will go to RCGLA!! What rad ladies.

Lastly, spots for our Ladies’ Rock Camp are filling up fast! If you wish Rock Camp for Girls was around when you were a kid, don’t miss out on this opportunity to experience camp for yourself! You’ll take on the same program the girls complete, only you’ll do it in a THREE DAY WEEKEND (April 13-15) and your tuition goes to help a girl attend camp this summer. Rock that good karma, ladies.

Whew! Looks like we’ve got our work cut out for us. As always, if you have any questions or wanna help out, feel free to hit us up on our website, fb, or email erica@rockcampforgirlsla.org

Hello, everybody! Hope you’re rested and recovered from the holidays. We’ve got a lot of exciting things in store for 2012, and can’t wait to grow even more this year!First news of the year was sad for us, as Austin and the Girls Rock Alliance lost a special and extremely loving sister, Esme Barrera. Esme was a Girls Rock Austin mentor and teacher, a music enthusiast, and dedicated much of her passionate energy to supporting girls in music. RCGLA has worked together with local bands and booker Maura K to organize a fundraiser so that the Barrera family’s financial responsibilities during this difficult time are less burdensome. We hope that you will come out to Pehrspace Friday Jan 20th and celebrate Esme by dancing the night away with some great local music from Spero, Aftergloam, SISU, and Blood Buddies. All ages!If you cannot attend but would like to help, please visit:http://forouresmeb.blogspot.com/For more info, go to:http://www.facebook.com/events/217577238325782/

We love our rock camp family so much — that means you and yours, too!

Hey little rockers — this is a cool opportunity to tell the world what is important to you. The Women’s Media Center is holding a call for girls and women 14-22 to submit videos discussing issues for girls today. What are some political ideas and actions you think would make the country better for you and your friends? You have a voice and you have great ideas, use them!
The winner, along with her parents or guardians, will be flown to Washington, DC to present her State of the Union report at the National Press Club in January. This is an opportunity to show the country that girls are an important part of our union and play a vital role as problem solvers and media thought leaders!”

Check out the link here. Good luck!

I love Bush Tetras. Alongside bands like the Au Pairs, Pylon, Delta 5, and Kleenex, they were huge personal influences, making great, danceable music with a message. So it’s with a heavy heart that I read about original Bush Tetras bassist Laura Kennedy’s passing. But her legacy remains in some of the best NY post-punk ever made.
